Just curious if anyone here has ever don/gone geocaching?

Myself and Cian (the son and heir) are heading on our first one tomorrow with one located within the outskirts of Drogheda and a few more which we may try for located a few miles out. Looks like a nice way to spend the morning.

Well off we headed today to attempt the first two GeoCaches which are in our area.
We headed off down to the Millmount and after a slight detour located the cache fairly easily.
It was a camouflaged in a dark bag and contained a log and pencil. Judging by the log it had been last visited a month before so once we'd put our three names on the log we wrapped it up and concealed it.

The next cache lay slightly outside of the town on the north side and involved a walk to the first coordinates at which we needed to locate a marker which would provide details which could be used locate the position of the actual cache which was a further 650 meters or so away. This was one we where looking forward to finding since it was detailed as a cache which contained additional contents to the basic cache.

Alas while we got to the location and had a fairly good idea as to vicinity where the cache was located we were unable to retrieve it since there was a group of people drinking near by.

Perhaps tomorrow or the coming weekend will prove less populated and we can locate it then.

Well you can use the official GeoCaching site to look up caches. You can set your home point and filter out caches based on the distance from there.

Alternatively there's an Irish GeoCaching site which has a list of caches per county. Their forums are here.

To get an idea of the amount of caches in your area try using this. As you can see from the link there's a good few even in the city centre.

Oddly enough I was planning on going geocaching again now that the good weather has returned.
There are a few around the city centre that I'm hoping to get around too over the next few lunchtimes.
