Not sure if anyone else remembers or has read the old Dragonlance books by y Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman. But it seems they're now making an animated film of the first of the books "Dragons of Autumn Twilight". Anyone heard about it ?

I remember reading these books, yeeeeeeears ago. They weren't exactly high brow but pretty entertaining if memery serves me correctly.

The IMDb says the film is in post production so I guess we'll be seening it soon.

I read these books when I was 12 or 13 - they were very low brow predictable and formulaic alright - very traditional, making no attempt to be something more than just pure, entertaining fantasy. That is a rare quality these days, which is sorely missed as we suffer through hundreds of pages of the modern-day protagonist's Donaldsonesque psychological turmoil, and over-elaborate allegories. Interesting to see Kiefer Sutherland as the voice of Raistlin - he was a great character. I'd say this would be a good one for the kids to watch.

I'd agree with you on the over complication of fantasy novels everything seems to huge sweeping epics or post-modern insights, when sometimes all you want is a simple minimum fast paced plot.
Gemmell was pretty good at that, worth a look in the unlikely case that you haven't read any of his stuff.

plus the did do some "thinky" stuff beside the hack an slash!
Tanis the half elf had racial issues(classical half elf sterotypical ones mind you), but then that was back then, when life was simpler, wasnt that long since we'd actually had shoes to walk to school in.

seriously, not holden out much hope for the animated series tho.

Haha, I'm not dissing Dragonlance - I really enjoyed them. I actually do remember Tanis' inner-struggle with his identity - but that was so superficial it was like a breath of fresh air compared it to Rand or Thomas Covenant or someone. It was actually quite good "why don't you call yourself Tanis half-man?" And I was genuinely upset when Sturm died!

Must say I quite enjoyed reading them back in the day. Recently (as in last year or so) started to read some of the R.A. Salvatore Drow books which would be down your street if you liked the dragonlance stuff.

The dark elf trilogy isn't bad in a uncomplicated page turner, ideal train material.

Damn... how I miss all those days as a student playing BG 2 on my laptop till 7am. What a great game that was, and that whole drow part was so atmospheric.
