Last month, Edward James Olmos shocked fans of Battlestar Galactica when he said that the fourth season of the show would be its last. The show's network, Sci Fi Channel, quickly dispelled Olmos' quote, saying that no such decisions had been made.
Now it appears a decision has been made, and unfortunately for Battlestar fans, Olmos was right. Executive producers Ronald Moore and David Eick have decided to end the series after the upcoming season, which concludes in 2008.
"This show was always meant to have a beginning, middle, and finally, an end," the producers said in a statement. "Over the course of the last year, the story and the characters have been moving strongly toward that end, and we've decided to listen to those internal voices and conclude the show on our own terms. And while we know our fans will be saddened to know the end is coming, they should brace themselves for a wild ride getting there: We're going out with a bang."
Battlestar Galactica, based on the 1970s sci-fi series of the same name, focuses on the battle for survival between the human race and the robotic Cylons. The show won the Peabody Award in 2006 and took home the Saturn Award, presented by the Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy & Horror Films, for Best Syndicated/Cable Television Series the past two years.
Season four will kick off with a two-hour extended episode, "Razor," in November.

I was never a fan really, but I always think its better to end a TV series before it peters out in a jaded fashion. It was popular enough that I dare say it will be back in some form, spin-offs and sequels and what not.

Much as I love the series, I do hope they end it on the upcoming series.
As 'tash said nothing ruins a series more than letting it run beyond its time. Look at the muck that is startrek as a case in point.

Star trek was still excellant after 18 years of continous production, with about 5 years of that with 2 different series on the go.
from my experiance most people who didnt like enterprise judged it on its first season. season 4 was exceptional in its quality, with some of the best star trek episodes ever.
im no fan of battlestar galactica, but i still acknolwedge that for many people it was an excellant show.

B.G. can't be compared to the entire Start Trek franchise, which has a far larger universe so to speak, and so greater scope for storylines. It could be compared to the Voyager spin off though, and didn't that end after about 4 seasons?

Take that back ! >:(
No way can Battlestar be compared to voyager, if any it could be compared to deep space 9 which was the only good star trek series to date. Its the self-contained nature of star trek episodes along with the constant moralising which gets my goat going.
I'd agree with justice that Enterpise wasn't the worst of the lot, thats reserved for both voyager and TNG. I'll also throw in the orginal series as well because while we should think fondly of old things, we all know its really truely awful. And because Star Wars also starts with the word star I'm putting that into the fire as well because its the one series I hate more than startrek.

Voyager: Surrounded and harried by hostile forces (principally some semi-mechanical ones, if not completely so) They are a desperate trip to Earth, getting into all manner of debacles while trying to maintain their hoity-toity federation morals in face of adversity.
BG: perhaps not surrounded, by certainly harried by hostile forces (mechanical). They are on a desperate mission to Earth, getting into all manner of debacles while trying to maintain their hoity-toity democracy in the face of adversity.

why i oughta
Re: Bye-bye Battlestar
LOL
well ya, voyager was the worst out of the modern star trek,
and while id not go as far as tash (talk about stoking the fires!)
voyager was a product of its times, namely technical inovation will solve all problems (dot com boom blah bla). and ya id have to admit that it isnt as good as the other series, im no fan of TOS, but it was ground breaking tv in its day.
but hey, lets not pollute this lementation of a somewhat successfull sci fi show.
